the grandma thing

Well what I forgot to mention is that "scary" looking 86 year old grandma only started working out at age 73 when she couldn't carry the giant bag of kitty litter that was on sale to the checkout. She decided that she needed to turn things around or she wouldn't be able to take care of herself. Her whole thing is about independance.

that other old grandma uses a walker and has in home help during the week and has to rely on family for the weekends and feels like a burden to her children.

ok I made that up about the white haired grandma but I wouldn't be suprised if that was the case.

You guys missed the point!

And yeah I'd be freaked out if my grandma was posing in string bikini's but I'd sooner be a grandma that can play with my grandkids instead of just having them arranged on my lap for a picture and having to get help picking them up.

Just because she could break them in half doesn't mean she's gonna!

One of my "themes" of weight loss and fitness is preventative. I didn't want to regret not doing something and it kicking me in the ass later. Like "if only I didn't smoke I wouldn't be dying now" sorta thing. So I'm trying to live as healthy as possible now. I don't want to say "if only I didn't carry around 30 extra pounds my whole life, my cholesterol and heart would be better" or "if only I took a multivitamin every day then I wouldn't...be going blind" I don't really know what all the healthy things I do are preventing or whatever but what's that saying? An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I'd sooner be strong and be able to carry my own kitty litter than be a burden or at least feel like a burden.

Prevention is a great thing.

You're a riot. I love it that you made up a sob story about the white haired woman. Although working in the Long Term Care department, I can pretty much confirm that it's most likley true. I've heard all the sob stories, you wouldn't even believe.

There is a man who goes to my gym and he must be at least 65 or so and you should see him go on the treadmill! He runs like there is no tomorrow. The man is in excellent shape. Everytime Scott's sees him he always comments on how great it is that he's in such great shape and wants to be exactly like that when he is 65!

Hopefully we'll all be strong little old ladies!

Hmm, I like the way the 86 year old weight lifting grandma looks. I guess I must be weird. I would definitely rather be like her than hunched over a walker at that age. I'll probably have white hair and wrinkles, but I am sure I'll feel better than I look, LOL. Have a great day Randi!

I totally get your point about weight lifting--you're preaching to the choir! But I have just never understood the inclination of some people to work out to the exclusion of all else(maybe get some pharmaceutical assistance), then get half naked, oil up their body and show it off competitively.

A huge part of why I lost the weight and started working out is because of who I want to be when I'm old--a vibrant and fit lady, with plenty of energy to enjoy my retirement.

And to Carolyn's point, one of the best places to get inspired is at 5K races, watching the 60 & 70+ year olds run, and run way faster than me. They are awesome! That's who I want to be when I grow up.

It's so true and one of the main reasons I started when I did. I want to be a healthy mom (when I finally have kids, that is), I want to play with my kids not just sit them in front of the tv. I want to teach them how to live healthy and hopefully they won't have some of the struggles I did and still do. I'm hoping to prevent poor health and as a result, poor self esteem, for generations to come. I hope it works!!
